INFO: Buying UK Stock on London Stock Exchange

Main Post:

Good morning everyone!
I have a question about buying UK stock on the London Stock Exchange being a non UK resident (I live in Italy).
What happens in terms of taxation? Did Brexit has implication?
I'm looking to buy WISE in these days and I would like to know if I should be aware of something before doing it.
Thank you!

Top Comment: The tax payable is 0.5% "stamp duty". Your broker should charge it automatically when you buy shares of UK companies. "Stamp duty is a worldwide tax on share transactions in UK incorporated companies. It is chargeable whether the transaction takes place in the UK or overseas, and whether either party is resident in the UK or not."

Just bought a Likebook P78 - UK info

Main Post:

I just bought a Boyue Likebook P78 from eBay (UK). TL;DR - It's a very good device.

Purchase details

It's difficult to find in the UK, but I managed to get it for £145, free postage. I ordered it Tuesday 6/07/2021 and received it Thursday 8/07/2021 from seller s888lam. It was advertised as BNIB, and came BNIB, shrink wrapped, well packaged. I had planned to buy from TechInTheBasket, as per MakeUseOf's review, but when I went to order, their website refused to work for me, and it was a couple ££ cheaper on eBay (though earlier they had it for £135), and I don't trust them to stick to their warranty (plus, they say they open and "check" their devices). I will be sending it on to a friend who lives abroad for a birthday present.

Review (or, info I wish I knew but couldn't find before I bought it)

  • Size: in a case, about the size of a DVD box; a little thinner (device by itself is very sleek). Screen is flush, and from comparison with older Kindles/Sony eReaders my family has, I'd recommend its 7.8'' as the absolute minimum size for prospective eReaders. Don't buy smaller.
  • Likebook Ares-size cases fit. I bought this case and screen protector, which are advertised as for the Ares, and they fit perfectly (screen protector is a bit crap, gloss plastic, though better than nothing)
  • eInk screen is very high resolution, very crisp. Noticeably much faster than old Kindles and Sony eReaders that I'm used to. Backlight is even, a little dimmer in one corner, but the point of an eReader for me is to read without a backlight, so...
  • Android system, no internet required for setup or use, automatic updates can be disabled (and updates can be done manually via update files, I was surprised to find out); a big plus in my book, who am used to Apple/Kobo/(possibly Amazon?) requiring accounts to use. Google Play wasn't there to begin with, but after I clicked through Settings, it randomly appeared on the home screen. (I won't be using it, Aurora Store, F-Droid Classic and ADB are better). Enabled ADB by tapping a bunch of times on Build Number (as usual on Android)
  • Build: solid, looks/feels like a modern iPad, with a plastic back. No visible screws, though there is what looks like a seam around the back (or, that failing, around the screen). I believe plastic backs are usually clip-on (glue, in my limited experience, usually being for glass, metal backs). But I can't verify, and won't just yet. It doesn't look like it would be too difficult to disassemble and replace the battery when it dies, but would require someone comfortable with phone repairs and spudgers.
  • I'll add more information as I test it and load it full of lots of books before I send it to my friend. Feel free to ask any questions, and I'll try and answer.
  • Apps I'll be adding: F-Droid Classic, Telegram, Aurora Store, misc. chess, crossword, sudoku games, Moon+Reader, RcX (rClone for Android), Sony eMail (or FairEmail), an RSS Reader, eInkBro, Firefox (plus uBlockOrigin), File Manager Plus
  • Book formats I'll be adding and testing: EPUB, MOBI, DJVU, CBZ, CBR, PDF, PDF/A (horrible unoptimised ones from Archive.org), AZW3, TXT, Doc, DocX, often large filesizes, A4, A5, custom paper sizes

Haworth Fern Info & UK Sellers

Main Post:

Hello,

I have read good things about and like the look of the Haworth Fern chair. However, there are limited options. I can order via Haworth direct with no colour options except all black (which is fine), and 4D armrests for £936. There is no mention of lumbar support at all. There are a couple of other sites but their chairs start at around £1300 which increases when adding 4D arms and lumbar support, but I have to call to enquire.

Can anybody shed any light on this, or point me in the direction of a reasonably priced seller which includes the lumbar support? Is the lumbar support worth it? I have sent Haworth an email requesting more information on this but no reply yet.

The other chair I'm considering is the Steelcase Gesture, but I prefer the back design of the Fern. I have tried both the size B and size C Aerons from HM, but I felt I was between sizes, and the lumbar support was a bit relaxed and not very noticable.

Thanks

Top Comment: I am a haworth dealer from belgium, the back of the fern without the lumbar support is already a very good support, in Belgium the additional price for a lumbar support is around 80 euros I use a Fern chair with extra lumbar support for daily work and it is the best. I always compare it with sitting comfort of a sofa but with all the correct ergonomic values :)

1zpresso my Delivery time, Fees to UK info for you

Main Post:

So I’ve seen a lot of people ask this question, and what delivery times and fees were to the UK, so thought I’d share mine. Will keep it simple as possible :).

I ordered, 1zpresso JX Pro with cylinder case. Came to:

$185 USD with shipping.=£144.08

Ordered Wednesday 18th Nov, evening.

Posted Thursday

Arrived in UK Saturday/Sunday,

FedEx Handling fee/import fee= £18.90

Delivered Monday 23rd Nov.

5 days delivery and total paid = £162.98

Hope this helps :)

Top Comment:

What? I cant believe you paid the handling fee.

I am in the same position, the grinder arrived today, and it looks and feels fantastic, I can't wait to try it.

BUT I am absolutely furious with the Fedex fee which is basically a hidden charge. In my case the import duty is around £6 while they added a flat £12 as an advancement (admin) fee. I followed the guidelines in this website to contest the charge and I hope it will work.

The charge has nothing to do with 1Zpresso, besides their choice of FedEx as their international carrier but this is not stated on their website.

Main Post:

I am considering switching to LineageOS. I don't need to have root but I would end up with an unlocked bootloader and no Google services.

Is there any up to date info on which UK banking apps work or refuse to work? Specifically I would like to know about HSBC and Starling

Any help or experiences is appreciated!

Top Comment: Hello. Have had oneplus 8 pro on lineage 18.1 for a year. my banking apps have never worked. PayPal yes but banking no. I'm based in Spain

is there any info about g3 coming to the uk?

Main Post:

sorry if this isn’t allowed, but is there any information yet on when (or if) the g3 dolls will be coming to the uk at all since they’ve been found online on amazon/target/walmart in america and canada? i’m a little worried we’ll never get them considering how scarce the creepros are over here with them being a mattel exclusive and restocks being super rare :(

Top Comment:

I've been wondering this too !! Especially since we've not even had the creepros in shops yet !
